When I rent a car do I need extra coverage?

Blue Bell PA insurance question:

Q; What extra insurance coverage do I need when I rent a car?

A: You may not need to purchase any extra coverage from the rental car company, as your current vehicle insurance policy may already cover you while driving the rental car. Each policy is different, so it’s important to review this coverage on your policy prior to getting to the rental car counter.  If your policy coverage does transfer to cover you while driving the rental vehicle, the policy limits will apply, including collision and comprehensive deductibles. As an option, you may want to consider paying for the extra rental car company coverage if your personal coverage has a high deductible.

Does my college student need renter’s insurance?

Blue Bell PA insurance question:

Q: As school begins for the fall 2009 semester, does my college student need renter’s insurance coverage while living away from home?

A: The first thing to do is check your current home insurance policy, and the policy language that addresses this type of “off-premise” personal property and liability coverage (policies sometimes differ in this coverage area). Many times if the college student is listed as a resident of your home, a certain percentage of your home insurance personal property coverage (maybe 10% perhaps) and full liability coverage extends to the temporary living quarters at the college. Many home insurance policies will also distinguish between a student living in a college dormitory, and off-campus housing (apartment, etc.)

Should you decide to purchase low-cost renter’s insurance for your college student, the coverage would be just for the name insured, not any of his or her roomates. Each unrelated person within the residence must have his or her own renter’s insurance policy.
